Car wrapup [Feb. 4th, 2009|03:09 pm]

Ended up calling a towing company, and got a great truck driver. He was able to tell me that the problem wasn't the battery, it was actually the safety switch. It must have gotten stuck, possible due to the cold. A little fiddling with the shift and he got it to start right up. Its a problem I may have chronically, or may never have again for the life of the car. In any event, he showed me to how to handle it if it does happen again, and gave my battery a shot of WD40 for good measure. So, all in all, the easiest possible resolution to the problem.

Whew, glad it was that easy to fix.

So, what is a safety switch?

I don't know that it was actually called a "safety" switch, though I do definitely remember that it is a switch. Apparently it's something that needs to be triggered in order for the engine to start the ignition process. It usually is triggered by the process of turning the key, but mine didn't do that for whatever reason. Fidddling the gear shift got it to flip so that the car would start.

Interesting. I know my car has a switch that doesn't let me shift out of park unless my foot is on the break, mostly because it's starting to go, and I can hear it whenever it activates. Definitely not looking forward to that repair.

This is something different, for sure.
My gear shift is loose(trying to put the car in R often winds up with it just in N), and if your car is anything like my car(which is rather old), then the expense of the repair is probably going to be more than the cost of the car. That is what I was advised today by the tow guy, and I'm pretty sure he's right.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was thinking. These car things, they are expensive.
