So, I've decided to quit my job.

I don't mean right now. I don't even mean that I am actively going to work towards it in the next month or so. Really what I've decided is that there is a point at which this job is of no more use to me. I already feel like I have learned just about everything I can from working where I do, which is more than it might seem. The only things holding me there have been the financial rewards of doing so and the pure inertia I have about changing my life circumstances.

But that time is coming to an end. I have managed to save a decent sum of money, and it will be larger in the future. Furthermore, as the mirror reminds me every day, I'm not getting any younger. Unless I settle for the sad fate of working in this industry for the rest of my life, I need to get out, and sooner will be better than later.

And have already decided against staying in the industry by both thought and action. Frankly, the people that will be promoted fastest and farthest are those that have a military/law enforcement background, and conform to those stereotypes. While not all of these people are bad, that is not the kind of corporate culture I would prefer. Also, I've already turned down (or failed to pursue) several small promotions because I don't want to get sucked in. I'd rather not have to second guess those now.

So, what I really have is a date by which, barring catastrophe, I will submit my resignation. The date is May 8, 2009.

So yeah, I'm not exactly pushing myself out the door. That date was picked because two weeks from that date will give me time to prepare for my next move, since my lease expires June 1st and I don't expect I'll have developed an intense desire to stay by then.

Of course, the ideal would be to have something to go to either on or before that point. I'll have to work on that, but after the RNC. Very busy until that's over. This is something I've been thinking about for a while, and already discussed a bit (mostly with my parents, I think?), and I figured it was high time I let all of you know.
